Onam Day

Onam is one of the most important festivals in Kerala. It is widely celebrated by people across the country. According to the legend, it is a kind of harvest festival which is celebrated to welcome the great king Mahabali, who was related to Mahabharata. It is believed that Mahabali comes to Kerala during this festival time. It is generally celebrated in the month of Chingam, which is the first month of kollavarsham(Malayalam calendar). According to the Gregorian calendar, it is celebrated in the month of August & September.The celebration lasts from five to ten days.  The carnival of Onam includes Atham, 10day, and Thiruonam. Onam is considered as the National Festival of Kerala in 1961. The Onam festival is full of fun & enthusiastic where people celebrate folk songs, energetic games, strong feasts, boats& flower etc.The government of India promotes this colorful festival. People celebrate ‘Tourist week’ during this Onam celebration. Kerala is a beautiful city with a lot of tourist destinations. A lot of people visit Kerala and celebrate Onam and its tradition every year.

The Onam celebration lasts ten days where Kerala is nourished with a lot of Zeal & enthusiastic. Every Malayalees love celebrating this festival in a good manner. The best part of this Onam festival is the great feast known as Onasadya, which is created on Thiruonam. The celebration host nine meals contain nearly 13 delicious dishes. The great dish Onasady will be served on the banana leaves. It is the beautiful time when people gathered together, sit and eat together. After finishing a meal, people enjoy Vallamkali, snake boat race, which is held on the famous river Pampa. There a lot of trained boatmen decorates snake boat through colorful songs & dance. There is another onam tradition which includes singing, playing games, enjoying places and all. It also includes sports activities such as Ambeyyal, kayyankali and Attakalam. Pookalam is another tradition of this Onam festival which is performed to welcome great king Mahabali. A lot of beautiful flowers were spread over a large mat which is enlighted with the number of lighted candles. Onam is considered as the most auspicious day of Kerala.

Some beautiful dance performances were performed during Onam festivals include Kummatti, Pulikali, Kathakali, and Thumbi. Pulikali is a beautiful art dance that is performed by experienced professionals to entertain people during the festival time. kathakali is unique and popular dance drama, which is famous worldwide. On this special occasion, Kathakali is performed in some elegant places in Kerala namely Kovalam. Shoranur and Cheruthuruthy. Kummati is another popular colorful Onam festival which is performed all over Kerala especially South Malabar. Kerala is enriched with kummattikali performers who visit every house and collects tiny gift from the people. Thumbi is another Onam event where singing and dance performance are performed in the Onam festival. Women perform Thullal dance and men engaged in some energetic sports. Onam is really a great festival to get together and enjoy the beautiful cities in Kerala.
