Guru Arjan Dev, is the fifth person of the Ten gurus in the Sikhism and he was known as the first martyr of the Sikhism. He is considered to be the first person in the Sikhism to derive the official edition of ‘Adi Granth’. This scripture was later expanded into the Guru Granth Sahib. He was the youngest son of Guru Ram Das and Bibi BhaniHe was born on April 15th, 1563 and became a guru on September 16, 1581, at the age of 18. He considers Guru Ram Das, to be his role model and followed in his footsteps. His birthplace is now made into a memorial place and known as the ‘Gurudwara Chaubara Sahib’.
Guru Arjan, reiterated the Masand systems, which was initiated by his father ‘Guru Ram Das’ and made suggestions that the Sikh people should donate one tenth of their income for the welfare of Sikh organization. He is not only known for collecting funds for the welfare of their people, he is also famous for settling the civil disputes in their region. He also sponsored for shared communal kitchens like ‘Gurudwaras and langars’.
He was imprisoned in the year 1606 CE, by the Mughal Emperor in the Lahore Fort. During imprisonment, he was asked to convert and follow Islam religion. However, the main reason behind Guru Arjan’s arrest was marked by Jahangir as his popularity has grown exponentially for his preachings among the people. Including this, he also refused to convert to Islam. Even today, the evidence of his execution is unclear. Some scholars state that he was executed by drowning or died during torture. His martyrdom is considered to be one of the saddest event in the history of Sikhism. This day is remembered as the ‘Shaheedi Divas of Guru Arjan’, every year on June 16th.
