Basava Jayanti

Basava Jayanti, is a Kannada festival, which is followed in the state of Karnataka. This festival marks the birthday of ‘Basavanna’, a well-known poet and a philosopher from the 12th century. He was also the founder of the ‘Lingayat’ religion. This celebration involves elegance and merriment and is celebrated all over Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh. Basava was born on Vaisakha month, in the year of Samvatsara. This time period was considered to be the beginning of a new era, which was popularly known as the ‘Basava Era’. This is declared as the government holiday in Maharastra and Karnataka.

Basavanna, was a great revolutionary legend, who introduced the spiritual ideology named as ‘Anubhava Mantapa’, which is also known as the ‘First Parliament concept of the World’. The main aim of this parliament is to derive practical solutions to everyone’s problems, during that time period. His preachings are scientifically proven to be accurate for problems persisting even in today’s world. The date of celebration of this festive varies year by year. However, this festive falls mostly in the month of April or May, each year.

During this time, many colourful parades are held in the state of Karnataka. Including this, many portraits of Basavanna are carried along the streets. And also many seminars are organised to teach his preachings. There is also a Basavanna statue near the Jagat circle, Karnataka, where a flag is being hoisted. These grand celebrations last for almost three days. Since this festival date varies each year, it falls on the date of April 18th in the year 2018.
