Babu Jagjivan Ram

Jagivan Ram is well known as a famous national leader and freedom fighter. He is also a renowned Union Minister, true democrat and a crusader of social justice. He had an attractive personality who played a vital role in Indian politics. He married Indirani Devi, who was also a freedom fighter. Her Father Dr.Birbal, a famous Medical practitioner who had been in the Ancient British army and won the Victoria Medal for his contribution in Chin- lushai war during 1990’s. On 17 July 1938, Indirani gave birth to a baby boy named Suresh Kumar. She also gave birth to her daughter after seven years. His family life was going happy during these times. Unfortunately, his son Suresh Kumar has passed away in the year 1985.

Jagjivan was born and live in a beautiful village which belongs to Shahabad district and now it is renamed into Bhojpur. He suffered a lot during his childhood as his father left his family. He completed his schooling under the guidance of his mother. Later he went to Calcutta University and completed his graduation. He had been into the politics and organized a lot of Ravidas Sammelans. Everyear, Guru Ravidas Jayanti is celebrated in different areas of Calcutta. He established the Akhil Bharatiya Ravidas Mahasabha in the year 1934. He was a freedom fighter who contributed a lot to our nation and the welfare of the people. Through this Akhil Bharatiya Mahasabha center, he helped the lower caste people to involve in the freedom struggle. He was considered as a Dalit Leader among the depressed classes. He is not only against the British government but also demands political representation. Following this, he appeared at the Ranchi commission an demanded voting rights for the Dalits. He helped a lot to the poor and needy people. He won millions of hearts.

Mahatma Gandhiji is his great inspiration. He played a vital role in the Freedom Struggle. Due to his social activities, he was arrested and sentenced in court on 10th December 1940. Soon after his release, he himself involved in social movement likes Satyagraha and Civil Disobedience Movement. Following this, he arrested again for his participation in the Quit India Movement which was launched by Indian National Congress.

He started his political career as a student activist and end up as a great freedom fighter. When he was 28 years old, he was nominated for the Bihar Legislator council. He was elected to the Bihar Legislative Assembly. He was also elected as the Parliamentary Secretary In the Ministry of Education & Development. Unfortunately, he reigned in 1938.He was elected again as the Minister of Labour in the year 1946. He had been the renowned member of the Union Cabinet for almost 1 years.  He played a crucial role in the Indian National Congress. From 1950 to 1977, he was the member of Central Parliamentary Board. He had been in the All India Congress Committee from 1940 to 1947. He was really a down to earth person.
